June 9, 2006TEACHERS RECEIVE GRANT TO ATTEND HUMANITIES INSTITUTE
Two teachers from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District have been selected for Southwest Vistas: The Border In American History, a summer institute sponsored by Humanities Texas and the University of Texas at El Paso from June 11-14 on the University of Texas at El Paso campus. Diane Reitmyer and Elaine Morrison Schwartz will join 39 other outstanding teachers from across Texas to explore the history and culture of the U.S./Mexico border. Reitmyer, who just completed her first year of teaching, teaches world history and geography at Cypress Springs High School. Schwartz, a U.S. history teacher at Langham Creek High School, has been teaching for 24 years. Recipients will attend lectures and participate in workshops that examine U.S. history and Texas history through the broader perspective of the Western hemisphere. “Humanities Texas is pleased to sponsor such an exciting educational initiative,” said Michael L. Gillette, executive director for Humanities Texas. “As border issues receive attention in the public dialogue, it’s essential that teachers and students understand the rich history and culture of the region.” Southwest Vistas is made possible with support from a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lecture, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films.
