Cy-Fair graduate Harding taken with top pick in 2007 WNBA Draft
April 4, 2007 — Former Cy-Fair High School and Duke University standout Lindsey Harding was selected No. 1 overall today in the WNBA Draft in Cleveland, Ohio.
Harding, a guard, was taken by the Phoenix Mercury with the top pick, then traded to the Minnesota Lynx about 15 minutes later for veteran Tangela Smith.
An Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year and two-time ACC defensive player of the year, Harding averaged 13.8 points and 4.0 rebounds during her senior season at Duke. The Lynx hope to capitalize on her talent following a 10-24 season in 2006.
“ Lindsey is deserving of being chosen the number one pick, she is truly a talented athlete,” Roubique said. “She has handled the attention and praise with great poise and modesty. Lindsey has stayed true to her convictions throughout her college career and it has been wonderful to see her succeed.”
Harding was a four-year starter and four-time all-district selection for Cy-Fair under head coach Ann Roubique before graduating in 2002. As a senior she averaged 25.0 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. As a junior she averaged 17.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. She still holds numerous school records in track and field in the 200-, 300- and 400-meter runs, 300-meter hurdles and high jump.
