JVHS recognized for ACT science scores
May 23, 2007 — Jersey Village High School was one of 382 schools in the United States— and the only one in Houston—highlighted in the ACT research report Rigor at Risk: Reaffirming Quality in the High School Core Curriculum.
The report highlighted schools whose students took the ACT during the 2003-04 school year. Jersey Village HS was commended for having students who scored exceptionally high on the science portion of the test.
Last week, the ACT presented the report to the nation’s education policy leaders, including members of Congress, the U.S. Department of Education and other major educational organizations.
“Our report confirms that, while taking the right number of high school core courses is certainly important, it also is no longer enough to guarantee that students will graduate ready for life after high school,” said Jon Erickson, ACT vice president of Educational Services. “[Jersey Village] is clearly a leader in preparing all high school students for postsecondary education and workforce training programs.”
Jersey Village HS principal Ralph Funk said the commendation was another proud moment in a year that included JVHS being named one of the top 75 public schools in the state by Texas Monthly.
“[The ACT commendation] was a complete shock and a great honor,” Funk said. “We have a great science program, but to receive that recognition on a national scale is tremendous. We must be doing something right.” |
