MS students to attend leadership academy

May 24, 2007 — Three CFISD middle school students were selected to participate in Education in Action’s summer 2007 Lone Star Leadership Academy program, a week-long event in which students across the state develop leadership skills while learning about the state of Texas .

Arnold Middle School eighth-grade students Brittni Black and Michelle Urrea and Aragon Middle School sixth-grade student Taylor Thompson are among 988 Texas students who will participate in one of the three regional programs—Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and Houston/Galveston.

Thompson will participate in the Austin program, where students will visit the offices of their state legislators, tour the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, take a rafting trip and enjoy a cowboy cookout. Black and Urrea will attend the Houston/Galveston program, which includes trips to NASA, the Houston Ship Channel, the San Jacinto Battleground Monument and Moody Gardens.

The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides an opportunity for students to learn about the spirit of Texas and what it means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem-solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups. In addition, participants meet other students from across the state while adding to their résumé of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.
