June 11, 2007— Dr. David Anthony, superintendent of schools, announced the promotion of Dr. Cheryl Salyards to associate superintendent of Governmental Relations and Communication, effective July 1.
Salyards received her bachelor of science in 1974, a master of education in 1977 and a doctorate in education in 1998. All of her degrees were earned from the University of Houston. She has 33 years experience in education with 29 years in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. She began teaching in HISD as a special education teacher. After four years, she accepted a position in CFISD as a teacher at Hancock Elementary. In 1980, she was promoted to the supervisor for the Northwest Harris County Deaf Education Co-op and after five years was then named coordinator of special education programs. In 1988, she was promoted to director of special education. In 2003, she accepted the position of assistant to the superintendent after serving as assistant superintendent for educational support services for five years.
As associate superintendent for governmental relations and communication, she will continue in her role as lead legislative staff for the district and serve as chief of staff for the superintendent. Also included in her responsibilities is supporting the district's communication department and working closely with the assistant superintendent for communication.
