August 28, 2007—Cypress Creek High School physics and mathematics teacher Maikel García, senior student Zaki Mughal and junior Tapash Sarkar were selected to participate in the Quarknet Summer Research, an international particle physics initiative sponsored by Fermilab through the University of Houston and Rice University.
García, Mughal and Sarkar were chosen from thousands of students and more than 100 Houston-area teachers who applied for the initiative. While four separate teacher-student groups were selected, the Cypress Creek contingent was the only group to complete three separate research activities culminating in two papers and one manual—slated for publication in the fall.
“The UH professors and graduate students were thoroughly impressed with our students and their work,” García said. Following our last day presentation, they expressed their astonishment at how capable and well prepared they were, particularly as compared to the students from the other participating schools.”
