Four CFISD teachers receive ‘A Day Made Better’ by OfficeMax

October 2, 2007 —Four CFISD teachers were each awarded with more than $1,400 in classroom supplies as part of the “A Day Made Better” event sponsored by OfficeMax and Adopt-A-Classroom.

Erin Crowe , first-grade teacher at Hairgrove Elementary School; Cynthia Pearson, reading specialist at Sheridan Elementary School; Tracy Holan, art teacher at Tipps Elementary School; and Michelle Ford, eighth-grade reading teacher at Thornton Middle School, were surprised in their classroom by representatives of their school and OfficeMax, who presented them with a wide array of school supplies.

Originating from the fact that teachers often spend their own money on educational supplies, “A Day Made Better” helps make at least one day better for 1,000 educators across the country.

Lesa Cain, Hairgrove principal, said Crowe was nominated for the honor because she is an outstanding teacher who was chosen to pilot Hairgrove’s new first-grade bilingual program, “One Way Dual Language.”

“We are honored to be able to recognize Erin and are thrilled that she was selected by OfficeMax,” Cain said. “It is critical that our business partners support us and help us communicate the positives that happen in classrooms each day. Erin's selection is a day made better in the life of a teacher and more importantly in the lives of her students.”

Anne Wilcox, Sheridan principal, said Pearson was nominated because she is a dedicated teacher who travels between classrooms with a cart filled with teaching supplies.

“ Cynthia is one of the most positive individuals and has a passion for teaching children to read,” Wilcox said. “Not only does she motivate and develop the love of reading with our students, she is there to support our reading teachers every step of the way. Cynthia serves others and expects nothing in return.”

According to Tipps principal Pamela Redd, Holan was nominated because of her enthusiasm for the job and willingness to challenge students to be risk-takers with their artwork. Holan was also Tipps’ 2007 Spotlight Teacher of the Year.

“ Tracy is a true facilitator of learning, and her students’ art products reflect the enthusiasm she instills in her students,” Redd said. “She would never do anything to bring attention to herself or her classroom, she just quietly goes about her day. I am happy that she will be getting some well-deserved recognition.”

Thornton principal Mark McCord said Ford was nominated for being passionate about her students learning.

“She is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their success,” McCord said.
