October 8, 2007 —U.S. Army Cpt. Brian Welch and his family will make a special visit to Emmott Elementary School ( 11750 Steepleway Blvd. , Houston ) on Tuesday, Oct. 16, to show his gratitude for the Emmott students who supported his troops during the 2006-2007 school year.
The connection between Emmott and the Army was made through Sgt. Heath Turner, the son of Emmott paraprofessional Beatrice Turner. During Sgt. Turner’s deployment with the Quartermaster Units of the 10 th Mountain Division, 94 th Brigade Support Battalion, the school was a huge supporter of the troops.
Emmott’s Boy Scout Troop sent many care packages, including a flag that was flown on foreign soil in the name of freedom; the Girl Scouts conducted a cake mix drive so the troops could have birthday cakes while away from their families; and the Student Council did a pencil/eraser/sharpener drive in a “Kids Supporting Kids” campaign. The soldiers then delivered the pencils to Afghan children who could not afford such school supplies.
Sgt. Turner’s former commanding officer (C.O.), Capt. Jay Schroder, informed current C.O. Capt. Welch of Emmott’s generosity, prompting Welch to visit the school. Welch will visit the Boy Scout meeting at 7 p.m.
According to Turner, Capt. Welch hopes that Emmott will continue to support the troops during their 15-month deployment to Iraq, which begins in November.
