November 12, 2007 — The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees approved the Calendar Committee’s recommendation for the 2008-2009 instructional calendar during its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Nov. 12.
HB1 mandated that instruction for the school year may not begin before the fourth week in August. For the 2008-2009 instructional year, the earliest start date would be Aug. 25.
In the fall of 2007, a 32-member district calendar committee was organized with broad-based representation, including teachers, parents, campus administrators, paraprofessionals, ancillary personnel and district-level administrators.
In October of 2007, parents, community members, teachers, administrators and support staff completed a survey designed to measure opinions regarding the 2008-2009 instructional calendar. The committee then arrived at a consensus for the following calendar recommendation to be presented to the Board of Trustees:
- students begin school on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008;
- Labor Day, Sept. 1, is a student/staff holiday;
- the calendar has a three-day Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 26-28);
- there is a two-week Winter Break for students (Dec. 22 – Jan. 5). Staff members also have a two-week Winter Break (Dec. 22 – Jan. 2), and a professional development day is scheduled for Jan. 5;
- Spring Break is scheduled for March 16-20;
- the school year ends on June 3; and
- the inclement weather day options would be Oct. 13, Jan. 19 and April 13.
