November 12, 2007 — Langham Creek High School senior basketball player Mercedes Johnson gave a verbal commitment to The University of Louisiana-Lafayette last week to play for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the 2008-2009 season.
Johnson was a First Team All-District selection in 2006-2007, and led Langham Creek to the playoffs last season for the first time in 18 years.
“Mercedes is such an impact player,” said Langham Creek head coach Annette Steward. “Teams know when she is on the court because she plays so hard and with so much intensity. She is such a versatile player that teams have a hard time defending her. She can post teams up or cross them over from the perimeter.”
Steward said she thinks Johnson will be an impact player at Louisiana-Lafayette.
“Mercedes will be very successful at the college level,” Steward said. “She is tall, athletic and quick. Mercedes plays like a college athlete already with her court awareness and basketball knowledge, she does things that you just can't teach. She is also very competitive, and I know she will put her heart and hard work into getting better each year.”
