Spillane MS students raise money to fight leukemia

Español

November 16, 2007 — Spillane Middle School students are participating in an advisory contest to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, known as Pasta for Pennies (formerly Pennies for Patients). The advisory that raises the most money between Oct. 31 and Nov. 20 will be awarded with a catered pasta lunch from the Olive Garden Restaurant.

With Spillane’s Superintendent Student Leadership Council (SSLC) and Teen Leadership spearheading the fundraiser, students have shattered their early goal of $900 with the current total of $6,800. The students have set a new goal of $8,000 that they are confident they will reach.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will make a personal visit to Spillane on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in the morning to pick up the donation and meet the top fund-raising advisories. Several advisories have already raised more than $200, some have raised more than $500, and one has raised more than $1,000.

“ The students have worked so hard planning the campaign, designing the advertising blitz and collecting money every Friday,” said Debbie Martin, SSLC adviser. “I can’t help but think if middle school students can make a difference, I certainly can. Spillane Spartans are just doing what we have taught them—being leaders.”
