January 7, 2008 — Preregistration for 2008-2009 kindergarten classes will be held in all elementary schools on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. To be eligible for this program, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2008. No exceptions will be made. The district provides full-day kindergarten. To register, parents must provide the school with the following items:
- a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate from the Bureau of Vital Statistics (see City of Houston Bureau of Vital Statistics to obtain a birth certificate if born in the city of Houston);
- a current immunization record;
- a proof of residency (example: lease agreement or utility bill); and
- a social security card for each child, if available.
For additional information regarding where to register kindergarten students, parents can contact their neighborhood school.
Students currently enrolled in the district’s prekindergarten program are automatically registered for kindergarten. The student’s permanent folder, which contains their birth certificate and immunization records, will be sent to the student’s home school for the kindergarten year.
Therefore, there is no need for parents of current prekindergarten students to attend the kindergarten registration on April 1. For additional information, call the kindergarten/ prekindergarten hotline at 281-517-2645.
However, prekindergarten preregistration will be held for LEP students only—students who speak a language other than English.
Students must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2008. No exceptions will be made. A student must be present at the time of registration to determine, through testing, if he/she will qualify for the program.
If a student qualifies as an ESL or bilingual student, the student may register for prekindergarten.
Registration for all other students eligible for prekindergarten will be held in August. To register, parents must provide the school with the same registration items listed above.
