February 1, 2008 —District football and basketball teams will compete in a CFISD-only eight-team athletic district (District 15-5A) beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its biannual district realignment at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 1.
District 15-5A will include Cypress Creek, Cy-Fair, Cypress Falls, Cypress Ridge, Cypress Springs, Cypress Woods, Jersey Village and Langham Creek high schools.
Cypress Woods will join the football district for the first time since opening in August 2006. Cypress Woods competed on the junior varsity level in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 and now climbs to the varsity ranks.
CFISD football and basketball teams were realigned in Region II for the first time since 2002. From 2004 to present, CFISD teams have competed in Region III.
Bi-district playoff opponents will come out of District 16-5A—another eight-team district featuring Cedar Park, Cedar Park Vista Ridge, Georgetown, Leander, Round Rock, Round Rock McNeil, Round Rock Stony Point and Round Rock Westwood.
“We are eager to have a UIL district composed exclusively of CFISD schools,” said Larry Peil, director of athletics. “While the move to Region II will be an adjustment, it will present a new challenge for our coaches and athletes.”
