
February 11, 2008 — Nine CFISD wrestlers qualified for the state meet by placing in the top four at the Region III meet at Katy ISD’s Merrell Center last weekend. Six alternates will also travel to state after placing fifth in their respective weight classes.
The UIL Wrestling State Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, at the Delco Center (4601 Pecan Brook Dr.) in Austin.
CFISD had two girls regional champions at the meet: Cypress Ridge High School’s Jessica Nguyen won first place in the 95-pound weight class and Cy-Fair High School’s Julie Smith won first in the 119 class.
In the 165 class, Cypress Ridge’s Kendra Lewis placed second, followed by third-place finisher Ginger Lanza of Cy-Fair.
Placing fourth were Cypress Springs High School’s Ashley Scott in the 110 class and Cypress Falls High School’s Tinae Faulk in the 148 class.
The following fifth-place girls will serve as alternates at state: Gwendolin Haley, Cypress Ridge, 102; Ashby Michaca, Cypress Ridge, 110; Samantha Jasperson, Cypress Springs, 185; and Danielle Vernier, Cy-Fair, 215.
The Cypress Ridge girls had CFISD’s highest team score, placing third behind Waller and Katy with 90.5 points. Cy-Fair was fifth with 59 points.
Three CFISD boys placed in the top four to advance to state: Cypress Ridge’s Tyler Lukes placed third in the 119 class; Langham Creek High School’s Derek Shaw placed third in the 130 class and Cy-Fair’s John DeMis placed third in the 180 class.
Cy-Fair’s Jake Ekster placed fifth in the 112 class and Cypress Ridge’s Chris Slater placed fifth in the 135 class. Both will go to state as alternates.
The Cypress Ridge boys also had CFISD’s highest team score, with 43.5 points to finish 13 th out of 65 teams. Cy-Fair placed 16 th overall with 41 points.
