
February 25, 2008 — Cypress Ridge High School senior Jessica Nguyen claimed the state championship in the 95-pound weight class of the UIL Wrestling State Championships, held last weekend at the Delco Center in Austin.
Nguyen, the top seed in her class, pinned all four of her opponents in the state championships. She started off with a pin in 0:28 of Frisco Liberty’s Kelsey Gunia, then pinned Amarillo Caprock’s Candy Martinez—the No. 3 seed—in 3:30. In the semifinals Nguyen pinned No. 4 seed Ofelia Valdez of Dallas Molina in 4:32, then won the title by pinning No. 2 seed El Paso Hanks’ Nicole Silva in 4:32 in the finals.
Cypress Ridge’s Kendra Lewis placed third in the 165 class; and Cy-Fair High School’s Julie Smith placed fifth in the 119 class and Danielle Vernier placed fourth in the 215 class.
On the boys’ side, Cy-Fair’s John DeMis placed third in the 180 class and Langham Creek High School’s Derek Shaw placed fourth in the 130 class.
