Cy-Fair girls win, advance to state title game

February 29, 2008 — The Cy-Fair High School girls basketball team defeated Converse Wagner 60-41 in the UIL 5A State Semifinal on Friday afternoon at the Erwin Center in Austin .

The Lady Bobcats, now 38-2 overall, will face the winner of DeSoto vs. Garland Naaman Forest in the championship game at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1.

Cy-Fair surged out to an early lead and built a 42-21 halftime lead before keeping the Thunderbirds at bay in the second half. Sophomore Chiney Ogwumike led all scorers with 20 points while senior Nneka Ogwumike added 16.

“The opportunity is there for us,” senior guard Mansa El said of the championship. “We just have to see that it’s not over yet and it’s not time to celebrate yet.”

“I think it would top off a great four years to end it with a state championship,” said senior guard Megan Majewski.
