
March 1, 2008 — The Cy-Fair High School girls basketball team defeated DeSoto 50-33 to clinch its first state championship in school history on Saturday night at the Erwin Center in Austin.
The Lady Bobcats finish their championship season with a 39-2 record. They got off to a blazing start with an 8-0 run and continued to widen the scoring margin on the way to victory.
Senior post Nneka Ogwumike was named the Championship Game Most Valuable Player. The Stanford signee scored 17 points and pulled down 17 rebounds in her final high school game.
“I’m still trying to soak all of it in, but this feels great,” Ogwumike said. “The real MVP is our team as a whole.”
“I’m so proud of the way these girls played tonight and all season,” added head coach Ann Roubique. “They played like champions since day one, and this is the perfect reward for them.”
