April 30, 2008 —Nurses from CFISD will be among the approximately 50,000 school nurses across the United States recognized on National School Nurse Day, Wednesday, May 7.
Cy-Fair ISD employs 76 school nurses, six licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and 38 clinic assistants.
“A coordinated approach to school health improves students’ health and their capacity to learn,” said Jan Jones, CFISD director of health services. “ The school nurse manages and coordinates the healthcare of students by serving as a liaison to the resources within the school and community, being a resource to school and district staff and providing healthcare and health education to students.”
National School Nurse Day was established in 1972 to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting. National School Nurse Day always falls on the Wednesday during National Nurses Week, May 6-12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing.
The 2008 National School Nurse Day theme is “School Nurses in Action: Transforming School Communities,” reflecting the global impact school nurses have on the health and well-being of students.
