May 1, 2008 — Cypress Woods High School sophomore Katherine Nguyen was recently announced as a winner of a 2008 National Gold Scholastic Writing Award.
Nguyen won the award for her personal essay/memoir entitled “The Scars That Bind Us.”
This is the second time Nguyen has won a National Gold Scholastic Writing Award. As an eighth-grade student in 2006, her personal essay/memoir entitled “Birthday Candles” was an award winner.
The Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) sponsors the regional level of the Scholastic Writing competition, in which Nguyen’s entry was chosen from among hundreds to advance to the national level of competition in New York City . Entries were judged on the basis of their originality, technical skills and evidence of an emerging personal style. Nguyen’s personal essay/memoir is one of only eight in this category that advanced from Harris County to national competition.
Nguyen will join all National Award winners in being honored at a June 5 ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City .
