Cy Woods tennis recognized for no-cut policy

May 7, 2008 — The United States Tennis Association (USTA) formally recognized the Cypress Woods High School tennis program and head coach Tim Calhoun for maintaining a no-cut policy for the tennis team.

A no-cut policy ensures that every student who wishes to play is welcomed as a member of the team. Since the start of this initiative in 2006, the USTA has recognized more than 2,000 high school tennis coaches and programs nationwide. Cypress Woods was also recognized last season for having a no-cut team.

Cypress Woods had almost 80 students in just three grade levels participating in the program this season, a number that Calhoun expects to exceed 100 in 2008-2009.

“If a student wants to play tennis and can contribute something to the team, they can play,” Calhoun said. “I don't turn down anyone as long as they offer something to the team, maintain their grades and follow the team/school rules. I believe tennis has offered me so much, and this is my way of helping to give back some of the lessons I learned.”

Every registered no-cut coach is recognized for his/her efforts with a certificate from the USTA. The coach also receives a “No-Cut Tennis Team” banner to display at his/her school’s courts.
