Cy-Fair athletic program ranks 4th in U.S.

May 22, 2008 — The Cy-Fair High School athletics program was ranked by Sports Illustrated as the No. 4 high school program in the nation for 2007-2008.

Cy-Fair fell in behind No. 1 Punahou (Honolulu), No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 3 Tupelo (Miss.) in Sports Illustrated’s “Top 25 athletic programs for 2007-08,” posted on SI.com on Tuesday, May 20.

Cy-Fair captured the state championship in girls basketball, reached the state semifinals in girls volleyball, and also claimed district championships in girls track, girls cross country and baseball. The football, softball and girls soccer teams also made the playoffs, while a girls swimmer earned a bronze medal at state.

Sports Illustrated listed Cy-Fair’s standout athletes as Stanford-bound girls’ basketball player Nneka Ogwumike, Michigan-bound running back Sam McGuffie and UCLA-bound swimmer Jennifer Lamb.

“This is a tribute to our student athletes for the job they’ve done this year, and it’s also a tribute to our excellent coaching staff,” said Cy-Fair athletic coordinator Ed Pustejovsky. “It’s a special time for Cy-Fair. You can coach for years and not see the success that we’ve had as an athletics program in the 2007-2008 school year.”
