Teacher to attend Supreme Court Summer Institute

June 10, 2008 — Cypress Woods High School street law, government and economics teacher Leah Stephanow will travel to Washington, D.C. June 12-17 to attend the prestigious Supreme Court Summer Institute, co-sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society.

Only 60 teachers were selected nationwide to participate in the institute, which is open to teachers who demonstrate outstanding ability in the field of law-related and civic education.

During the institute, the teachers will attend sessions at Georgetown University Law Center, meet with Supreme Court deputy clerks and learn about the nomination process by professors and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. They will participate in a moot Supreme Court hearing on the case Morse v. Frederick, a student free speech case decided by the Court in 2007, take a tour of and attend a reception at the Supreme Court.

“I am extremely honored and excited about being selected to attend this institute,” Stephanow said. “I have enjoyed studying the Supreme Court and its inner-workings for many years, and look forward to learning even more about the Court to bring back and share with my colleagues and my government and street law students.”

Street Law, Inc., is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., which provides practical, participatory education about law, democracy and human rights.
