June 11, 2008 — Three CFISD students were selected to participate in Education in Action’s summer 2008 Lone Star Leadership Academy program, a week-long event in which students across the state develop leadership skills while learning about the state of Texas .
Truitt Middle School seventh-grade students Steven Granados and Aurora Silva and Copeland Elementary School fifth-grade student Griffin Judge are among approximately 1,000 Texas students who will participate in one of the three regional programs—Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and Houston/Galveston.
Granados will participate in the Austin program, where students will visit the offices of their state legislators, tour the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, take a rafting trip and enjoy a cowboy cookout.
Silva will participate in the Houston/Galveston program, which includes trips to NASA, the Houston Ship Channel, the San Jacinto Battleground Monument and Moody Gardens.
Judge will participate in the Dallas/Fort Worth program, where he will visit sites including the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.
All programs will feature career speakers who will introduce participants to a wide variety of unique career and internship opportunities. Participants will discuss what they learn, complete problem-solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in leadership groups. In addition, participants will meet other students from across the state, develop leadership skills and bring home a wealth of information to supplement their school curriculum.
