September 5, 2008 — Three CFISD high schools will launch Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES) programs during a special ceremony at Cypress Ridge High School (7900 N. Eldridge Pkwy.) on Oct. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
AYES is a partnership among participating automotive manufacturers, participating dealers and selected high schools designed to encourage youth to consider careers in retail automotive service and prepare them for entry-level career positions or advanced studies in automotive technology.
This marks the first year in which three programs will launch simultaneously in CFISD—at Cypress Falls, Cypress Ridge and Cypress Springs high schools. Added to the existing program at Cy-Fair High School, it gives CFISD the most participating AYES schools in the Houston area. Support from area dealerships has been instrumental in the large number of programs.
Gulf States Toyota has donated three vehicles through the San Jacinto College manufacture program to the schools for the event. The vehicles will be on display in front of the school.
During the Oct. 9 ceremony, lunch will be served in the teaching theater followed by a short program in the auditorium. Cypress Ridge principal Claudio Garcia, Cypress Springs principal Barbara Weiman and CFISD superintendent Dr. David Anthony are scheduled to speak, along with Houston Auto Dealers Association (HADA) president Walter Wainwright. Several local elected officials have also been invited.
Some of the manufacturers scheduled to attend are General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Lexus, BMW, Nissan, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Chrysler and Ford.
“ AYES schools are successful due to the fact that they are in a partnership with manufacture dealers and the school system,” said Joel Mooneyham, Cypress Ridge AYES instructor. “Through this combined effort, students in the community have an avenue to pursue a career of their dreams.”
