November 4, 2008 —The Cypress Creek High School boys and girls water polo teams, coached by Jeff Chandler, each placed third at the Texas High School Water Polo Coaches Association (THSWPCA) State Tournament, held Oct. 31 – Nov. 1 in Austin.
In the girls’ bracket, Cypress Creek defeated Lamar 4-3 in its first game Friday before falling 17-2 to Clear Lake on Saturday morning. Cypress Creek then rebounded with a 4-3 win over Clear Creek in the third-place game on Saturday afternoon.
Other participating CFISD girls’ teams included Langham Creek, sixth place; Cy-Fair, ninth place; and Cypress Springs, 12th place.
In the boys’ bracket, Cypress Creek defeated Clear Creek 11-6 in its first game on Friday afternoon, then lost a close game 6-4 to Clear Lake on Saturday morning. The Cougars ended their tournament on a high note, however, knocking off Lamar 9-7 in the third-place game on Saturday evening.
Other participating CFISD boys’ teams included Cy-Fair, sixth place; Langham Creek, 11th place; and Cypress Springs, 12th place.
Several district athletes were named to the THSWPCA All-State Water Polo Team.
On the girls’ side, Cypress Creek senior Elyssa Salcido made the First Team; Cypress Creek junior Cassidy Cloves and Langham Creek junior Erin Dickson made the Second Team; and Cy-Fair senior Jennie Heinze made Honorable Mention.
On the boys’ side, Cypress Creek senior Jackson Gould made the First Team; Cy-Fair junior Eric Doyle and Cypress Creek sophomore Nathan Bean made the Second Team; and Langham Creek senior Andrew Keily made Honorable Mention.
