March 4, 2009 — The CFISD Young Men for Positive Action (YMPA) and Young Ladies for Positive Action (YLPA) and the Hispanic Organization for Leaders of America (HOLA), will host Step and Latin Dance district competitions at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road) on April 8-9.

The Step Competition, sponsored by YMPA and YLPA, will be in the Berry Center auditorium at 7 p.m. on April 8. Groups of students representing various CFISD schools will compete in step dance— a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word and hand claps.

The Latin Dance Competition, sponsored by HOLA, will be in the Berry Center auditorium at 7 p.m. on April 9. Latin dance categories will include salsa, merengue, reggaeton, bachata, cumbia and other dances originating from Latin America and the Caribbean islands.

Tickets are $5 apiece and are available on the day of each respective event at the Berry Center box office. The box office opens at 3 p.m. for ticket sales. The doors open at 6 p.m. on both April 8 and 9.

The YLPA and YMPA are student organizations that encourage academic achievement and high moral character. Members are active in athletics, fine arts and other student activities, as well as several community service projects throughout the school year.

HOLA is a school-based club made up of Hispanic students who find interest in studying and appreciating Hispanic culture. Activities include cultural information, leadership training, community service, team building, dance appreciation and various other projects.
