May 21, 2009 — For the second consecutive year, a team of students from Kirk Elementary School won the Name That Book district contest, held Wednesday at the Berry Center.

The mission of the Name That Book Program is to foster lifelong reading by all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. The students were provided with a list of 100 books and encouraged to read as many as possible prior to the district event. The contest challenges the students’ knowledge of the books.

In the 27-team district competition, Kirk accumulated the most points after 10 rounds. The students faced a series of questions in the vein of Jeopardy! from Roy Garcia, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction and school administration, that gave clues about different books, and were asked to “name that book.”

Kirk’s winning team members are Pooja Agrawal, Timothy Angeles, Tiffany Pham Nguyen, Kevin Sheard, Michelle Truong, Jamie Won and Julianna White.

“I am proud of all Name That Book participants and appreciate the hard work of the campus librarians, family and friends who have supported them throughout the process,” said Jessica Hughes, CFISD coordinator of library and media services. “For Kirk's team to win the district contest, they mastered not only the content of 100 excellent titles, but remembered specific details—even the exact titles.”
