May 28, 2009 — The National Forensic League (NFL), the national honor society for speech and debate, has selected Cypress Ridge High School senior Nick Cugini as one of six finalists for the National Student of the Year Award.
With more than 30,000 graduating seniors in the NFL, the Student of the Year Award is one of the highest accolades a student in the prestigious honor society can achieve. While at the 2009 National Speech and Debate tournament in Birmingham, Ala., on June 14, Nick will interview with a committee of select coaches from across the country to determine the national winner.
Cugini is the reigning Texas Forensic Association (TFA) state champion in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking (his second straight year to win the title), a five-time TFA state finalist, a two-time UIL State Speech Finalist, a three-time NFL national qualifier and is ranked third overall in the nation for speech honor points from competition.
“I’ve always known that Nick is one of the best in the nation,” said Cypress Ridge speech and debate coach Scott Baker. “Now Nick has the chance to show off his abilities on the national stage.”
Cugini will attend Yale University in the fall. He is scheduled to speak at the Cypress Ridge graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 7 at 1 p.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road).
