June 4, 2009 — Cypress Lakes High School art students and teachers provided visitors with an exhibition of admirable artwork at CFISD’s first annual Health Expo on Saturday, May 16.
The students and teachers created four different murals that represented themes emphasized at the Health Expo. The artists used the grid method to work on the large pieces, which served as a helpful technique and promoted teamwork as the students worked side-by-side throughout the day. All work that was used for the murals came from original designs, which were duplicated into the larger squares.

The students and teachers created this Ape Mural with the message that “Every Day is Earth Day.” The 16 x 16-foot mural features a baby ape latching onto his mother and encourages others to think of the environment and those who live in it. Eight people spent five hours creating the mural: Teachers Julie Gawel and Lee Ann Jackson and students Nicole Grady, Autumn Rainwater, Moises Orozco, Chris Garcia, Dinora Olvera and Ciara Longoria.

This Breathe Mural, with the message “Breath Deeply,” emphasizes the importance of healthy lungs by not smoking and promoting clean air. The 5 x 5 square was created by Cassandra Banda and Christine Nguyen.

This Completed Hands Mural used two different colored hands to represent diversity. The leaf is a symbol for organic, and encourages people from all backgrounds to eat healthier and live healthy lifestyles. Jacqueline Rocha and Layla Bakhitiari worked on this 5 x 5 mural together.

The “Health” mural featured the message, “Health, Physical, Well-being,” meaning that the definition of health is having a physical well-being. This 5 x 5 square shows many hearts, encouraging people to be aware of heart disease and other ailments that affect the heart and to get a health screening. Katherine Nguyen created this mural by herself. |
