Swimmers qualify for state championships

Cypress Creek swimmers Kathryn Eckhart and Jonathan Edwards each won two individual events at the Region IV Swimming and Diving meet last weekend.

February 16, 2010—Six regional champions in eight events represented CFISD at the Region IV Swimming and Diving Meet, held last weekend at Woodforest Natatorium in The Woodlands. The district will feature 21 total entries at the UIL Class 5A Swimming & Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 26-27 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.

In the women’s team rankings: Jersey Village finished fourth with 178 points; Cypress Woods finished sixth with 164 points; Cypress Creek was eighth with 137 points; Langham Creek took ninth with 96 points; Cy-Fair was 13th with 79 points; Cypress Ranch was 20th with 10 points; Cypress Ridge was 22nd with 6 points; Cypress Falls was 24th with 2 points and Cypress Springs was 25th with 1 point.
Cypress Creek sophomore Kathryn Eckhart was a multiple regional champion, winning both the 50 freestyle (23.52) and 100 backstroke (56.09). She was also a part of the regional champion 200 freestyle relay team—comprised of junior Katie Adams, sophomore Leah Ortiz, freshman Koo Eckhart and Kathryn Eckhart—who finished in 1:37.21.

Cypress Woods senior Cammile Adams was another two-time regional champion, winning both the 100 butterfly (54.99) and the 500 freestyle (4:48.31). Her time in the 100 butterfly set both a pool and regional record.

In the men’s team rankings: Cypress Creek placed third with 207 points; Cy-Fair placed fifth with 148 points; Cypress Woods took 14th with 58 points; Cypress Springs was 18th with 21 points; Langham Creek was 19th with 20 points; Cypress Lakes was 20th with 16 points; and Cypress Falls and Cypress Ranch tied for 22nd with 6 points.

For the second consecutive year, Cypress Creek junior Jonathan Edwards won two regional championships. He was first in the 200 freestyle (1:38.63) and 100 backstroke (49.62). He set the pool and regional record for both events, and set a pool record for the 100 freestyle with his split time of 45.24 in the 400 freestyle relay.

The following swimmers also qualified for state:

Boys

  • Cypress Creek 200 medley relay team (sophomore Jacob Wallace and juniors Keith Murphy, Nate Bean and Jonathan Edwards), second place, 1:35.43; Cypress Creek junior Keith Murphy, 200 freestyle (second place, 1:39.04) and 100 breaststroke (fifth place, 59.36); Cy-Fair senior Kody Gagne, 50 freestyle (second place, 20.91) and 100 freestyle (second place, 46.03); Cy-Fair 200 freestyle relay team (seniors Eric Doyle, Ricky Carnicle and Gagne and junior Garrett Glass), second place, 1:25.69; Cypress Creek sophomore Wallace, 100 backstroke (fifth place,  53.28); Cypress Creek 400 freestyle relay team (juniors Edwards, Bean, Ryan Layne and Murphy), third place, 3:07.90; and Cy-Fair 400 freestyle relay team  (seniors Doyle, Carnicle and Gagne and sophomore Alex Heldman), fifth place, 3:10.66.

Girls

  • Langham Creek senior Morgan Sharp, 200 freestyle (second place, 1:49.45) and 500 freestyle (third place, 4:55.72); Jersey Village sophomore Chelsie Miller, 200 individual medley (third place, 2:06.15) and 500 freestyle (fourth place, 4:57.20); and Jersey Village 200 freestyle relay team (juniors Callye Baker, Allison Hickey, and April Holland and sophomore Miller), third place, 1:37.94.
