Cy-Fair girls headed back to state; Langham Creek boys advance

February 27, 2010— For the fourth consecutive year, the Cy-Fair High School girls’ basketball team is headed back to the UIL Class 5A State Championships in Austin.

Cy-Fair won both of its games in the Region II Tournament in Waco on Friday and Saturday to be among the final four teams remaining in Texas. The Bobcats defeated Dallas Skyline, 54-39, on Friday evening, then knocked off Bryan, 54-50, on Saturday afternoon to qualify.

“We had some chances to pull away but Bryan played extremely well and they weren’t going to let it happen,” Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique said of the regional championship game. “Our kids made buckets when we had to have them, caused turnovers when we had to have them and made free throws at the end and we were able to get a big victory.

“Going back to state again is special,” she said. “The girls are excited and maybe a little relieved as well. The talk of going back for the fourth time was something other people talked about, but we just tried to focus on the next game every time. It’s nice to have that off our plates.”

Cy-Fair will face Region I champion Cedar Hill in the state semifinal at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. The winner will face the winner between Fort Bend Hightower and San Antonio John Jay in the state championship game at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.

Boys Basketball

The Langham Creek High School boys’ basketball team continued its postseason surge with a 62-51 overtime victory over The Woodlands College Park on Friday in the area-round playoffs at The Woodlands High School. The Lobos will now face The Woodlands in the Region II quarterfinal on Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road).

In other boys’ playoff action, Cypress Woods High School lost a hard-fought battle with Oak Ridge in their area-round contest at Tomball High School, 55-53. The Wildcats wrap up their season as the District 15-5A champions and area playoff finalists.
