March 6, 2010 The Cy-Fair High School girls’ basketball team clinched its second state championship in the last three seasons, running away from Fort Bend Hightower, 65-41, on Saturday night at the Erwin Center in Austin.

Senior Chiney Ogwumike ended her career as a Bobcat on a high note, pouring in 31 points and grabbing 18 rebounds on the way to earning unanimous 5A Tournament MVP honors.

“I guess it all hit me this week while I was sitting in class, dreaming that a state championship was within our reach,” Ogwumike said. “My dreams came true as a senior and it’s awesome to exit on a win. It’s so overwhelming.”

The Bobcats came out firing from the opening tip-off, compiling a 27-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and extending it to 45-11 at the half. They never trailed in the decisive victory.

“We talked to a couple of the kids early this afternoon and they wanted to turn the pressure up and get after them,” said Cy-Fair coach Ann Roubique. “I thought we could, but didn’t know exactly what would happen. They came out pretty hot.

“This feeling is indescribable,” she said. “Winning a state championship is one of those things that everyone wants and everyone desires. This group of kids made their minds up and worked together; it’s amazing what you can do when you have a dedicated group with this kind of chemistry.”

Senior guard Aarika Reyna said it was the best possible way she could have ended her career at Cy-Fair.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” Reyna said. “I had this feeling when we won two years ago and I was so happy for all the seniors. That’s how I wanted to go out, on a win. Coach Roubique tells us, ‘There’s only one team that leaves the court with the win,’ and now that happens to be us.”
