May 7, 2010 —Cypress Woods High School senior Alex Gonzalez signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play for the University of Texas-Arlington (UTA) Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team in 2010-2011.
Gonzalez has been a member of the TIRR Memorial Hermann Hotwheels team since 2005. He was confined to a wheelchair shortly before that time when debilitating spasms set in that doctors have been unable to diagnose or cure.
“We are proud of Alex for persevering over his setback and sticking with the passion he’s had since his youth,” said Kelly Ellis, Cypress Woods director of instruction. “Despite medical diagnoses, he has fought to play the sport he loves, and in turn has served as an inspiration to many of his classmates at Cy Woods. We’re proud of him for achieving the incredible honor of a college scholarship—a difficult feat even for students without this kind of obstacle.”
Coached by Doug Garner, the UTA Movin’ Mavs have participated in intercollegiate athletics since 1989-1990 and are one of the only college wheelchair basketball teams in the state to offer scholarships. Last season the Movin’ Mavs played collegiate opponents like Illinois, Missouri and Alabama, as well as professional organizations such as the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Texans’ wheelchair teams.
