May 27, 2010 — A team of students from Willbern Elementary School won the Name That Book district contest at the Berry Center on May 26.
Coached by Rosanne Sontag, Willbern’s team members are Sarah Caster, Obi Enemchukwu, Haley Huynh, Frasier Jordan, Samaa Mehmood, Morgan Stewart and Isabel Velazquez.
In the 26-team district competition, Willbern accumulated the most points after 11 rounds. The students faced a series of questions that gave clues about different books, and were asked to “Name That Book.” The winning answer to the question, “She was the saddest at night when she would think about everything she lost – her friend, her cat, the feel of sunlight on her skin, the smell of grass and flowers. Name That Book,” was Who Was Anne Frank?
Other finalist teams were Black, Farney, Francone and Yeager elementary schools.
The mission of the Name That Book Program is to foster life-long reading by all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. The students are provided with a list of books and are encouraged to read as many as possible, and the program culminates with a series of contests to celebrate the students’ knowledge of the books.
Roy Garcia, associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction and school administration, asked the questions. Judges included Jessica Hughes, coordinator of library and media services; Kathy Fisher, retired CFISD librarian; and Nick Bruel, author of the Name That Book title Bad Kitty Gets a Bath.
