August 30, 2010 — Seventy-five staff members at Cypress Falls High School worked to make someone’s day better on Saturday, serving as Habitat for Humanity volunteers while building homes in a northwest Houston community.

Adhering to Cypress Falls’ 2010-2011 theme, “Make it Matter…Be a Hero,” principal Becky Denton reached out to her contact at Habitat for Humanity, offering her school staff and their families an opportunity to make a difference in the community.

The volunteers were dispersed among five homes in the Hamill Ranch community, located near Richey Road and Champion Forest Drive. Between 7:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., they completed a variety of tasks in the different locations, from clearing debris to priming the interior of a home to shingling a roof.

“It was fantastic; it really went well,” Denton said. “It was lots of hard work on a very hot day, but it was also lots of fun. I think it was harder work than some people originally thought, but it was very rewarding.

“One of our groups had the opportunity to paint a house alongside the family that will eventually live in it. When you give like that, you get even more—it just feels so right. I was really proud of everyone who came out to serve.”

Denton said she is planning another Cypress Falls Habitat build for the fall, while the Eagles football team will likely continue the school’s Habitat efforts with a spring service project.
