Swimmers qualify for state championships

February 14, 2011 — Fourteen regional champions in 10 events represented CFISD at the Region V Swimming and Diving Meet, held Feb. 4-5 at the University of Houston. The district will feature 21 total entries at the UIL Class 5A Swimming & Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 18-19 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin.

In the men’s team rankings: Cypress Creek placed first with 296 points; Langham Creek placed sixth with 157 points; Cypress Ranch took 11th with 85.5 points; Cy-Fair was 13th with 64 points; Cypress Ridge was 14th with 63.5 points; Cypress Falls was 15th with 62.5 points; Cypress Woods was 18th with 46 points; Cypress Lakes was 19th with 40 points; and Cypress Springs was 23rd with 9 points.

Cypress Creek senior Jonathan Edwards continued his three-year string of multiple regional championships, placing first in the 200 individual medley (1:50.45) and 100 backstroke (48.27, a meet record). He was also part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay team with teammates Keith Murphy, senior; Tyler Rice, senior; and Ryan Layne, junior; that set a meet record with a time of 3:05.48.

Cypress Creek’s Keith Murphy won the 100 breaststroke with a meet-record time of 56.07. Langham Creek’s 200 freestyle relay team of senior Thomas McNulty, junior John Eno, freshman Austin VanOverdam and sophomore Stuart Sharp placed first with a time of 1:26.41.

In the women’s team rankings: Cypress Creek finished fourth with 228 points; Jersey Village finished fifth with 209 points; Cypress Ranch was seventh with 181 points; Cy-Fair took eighth with 143 points; Cypress Woods was ninth with 107 points; Langham Creek was 14th with 38 points; Cypress Ridge was 16th with 22 points; Cypress Lakes was 17th with 10 points and Cypress Falls was 22nd with 5 points.

Cypress Creek junior Kathryn Eckhart was a multiple regional champion, winning the 50 freestyle with a meet-record time of 23.44 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.90. She was also a part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay team along with teammates Katie Adams, senior; Leah Ortiz, junior; and Karoline Eckhart, sophomore; that posted a meet-record time of 3:28.35.

Katie Adams also won the regional championship in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.24. Jersey Village junior Chelsie Miller won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.10. Cy-Fair junior Sommer Meyers won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 397.55.

• Cypress Creek 200 medley relay team (junior Jacob Wallace, senior Keith Murphy, senior Nate Bean and senior Kevin Gravesmill), second place, 1:35.17; Cypress Creek 200 freestyle relay team (seniors Jonathan Edwards, Tyler Rice, Kevin Gravesmill and Nate Bean), third place, 1:27.23; Cypress Creek senior Keith Murphy, 200 freestyle (third place, 1:41.37); Langham Creek sophomore Stuart Sharp, 200 freestyle (fifth place, 1:41.55); Langham Creek freshman Austin VanOverdam, 200 individual medley (third place, 1:54.06); Cypress Creek junior Jacob Wallace, 100 butterfly (fifth place, 50.46) and 100 backstroke (third place, 51.06); Cypress Creek senior Nate Bean, 100 butterfly (fourth place, 51.41); and Cypress Creek junior Ryan Layne, 500 freestyle (third place, 4:37.54).

Girls

• Jersey Village junior Chelsie Miller, 500 freestyle (second place, 4:56.38); and Jersey Village 200 freestyle relay team (seniors Callye Baker, Allison Hickey and April Holland and junior Chelsie Miller), third place, 1:38.79.

Cypress Creek head coach Jeff Chandler was named the Men’s Regional Coach of the Year, while Edwards was named the Men’s Swimmer of the Meet and Eckhart was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet.
