Journalism students honored by Press Women of Texas

April 6, 2011 — Journalism students from Cypress Falls, Cy-Fair, Cypress Creek and Jersey Village high schools were named winners this week in the Edith Fox King High School Journalism Contest, organized by the Press Women of Texas (PWT).

First-place winners have been sent to the National Federation of Press Women for judging in the national contest—results of which should be available by May 1.

The awards will be distributed at the annual PWT conference on Saturday, April 30 in Georgetown.

Competing among more than 350 entries statewide, the following students brought home first-, second-, third-place and honorable mention honors:

Cy-Fair High School

• Darby Nevins, first place, Opinion;

• Sarah Smith, first place, Reviews;

• Jay Drummond, second place, Reviews;

• Katie Goins, second place, Editorial; and honorable mention, Opinion;

• Carly Wood, honorable mention, Opinion; and

• Marianna Yoder, honorable mention, Feature Story.

Cypress Creek High School

• Wynne Davis, second place, Columns.

Cypress Falls High School

• Morgan Young, first place, Columns; first place, Video – Feature Story; second place, Video – Sports Story; and third place (tie), Video – News Story; and

• Bianca Gomez, second place, Feature Photo; second place, Graphics/Photo Illustration; second place (tie), Video – Feature Story; and second place (tie), Sports Photo.

Jersey Village High School

• Emma McKenzie, second place, Opinion; and third place, Graphics/Photo Illustration; and

• Mikela Melakis, honorable mention, Double-Truck Layout.
