August 30, 2011— M.Sgt. Herman Broussard, an Air Force JROTC instructor at Cypress Falls High School, was presented with the 2010-2011 AFJROTC Outstanding Instructor Award last week.
The award recognizes the exemplary performance and contribution of instructors on their cadets, unit, school and community.
M.Sgt. Broussard, who first learned of his award in May, said he was surprised when principal Becky Denton, associate principal Elizabeth Wood and director of instruction Kenya Turner showed up during one of his classes last week to present him with the award.
“I was really shocked. It’s like I tell the cadets—it’s not about me, it’s about them,” he said. “We give them the guidance but they’re the ones putting it into action.”
M.Sgt. Broussard, who commands Unit TX-20003 with Maj. Timothy Nichols, helped the unit grow from 89 cadets to approximately 150 since arriving at Cypress Falls in 2006.
“The biggest thing I like about AFJROTC is it gives the students that autonomy they wouldn’t get in any other class. They are actually self-governing toward getting a job done,” he said. “You can see the maturity develop – a student starts off as ninth-grader, and often you can see them blossom until they have a totally different outlook on life. When they come back to see you and they are successful, that’s the payoff.”
