Local author Andrea White to discuss book with students

Andrea White |
Feb. 15, 2012—CFISD will host author Andrea White, the former first lady of Houston, next week as she participates in a live video conference with students from six middle schools.
Students from Bleyl, Thornton, Labay, Campbell, Arnold and Spillane middle schools recently read White’s science-fiction novel, Windows on the World, in their English/Language Arts (ELA) classes. White, who is the author of four published novels, generously donated copies of the book to students at those campuses.
During the Feb. 22 video conference, White will discuss that book as well as her career as an author, and students will be able to ask her about the characters, future books and writing style.
From the professional library at the Instructional Support Center, White will conduct two separate simulcasts: the first will be for Bleyl, Thornton and Labay from 9 to 9:45 a.m., while the second will be for Campbell, Arnold and Spillane from 10:15 to 11 a.m.
“Mrs. White has generously donated both her time and novels to our district, and we are honored that a published author will be talking about her profession with our students,” said Kristi Thaemlitz, coordinator of secondary reading and ELA. We greatly appreciate her generosity in providing our students with an exciting opportunity to read her book and meet her!” ———
Windows on the World, the first volume of the UpCity Chronicles trilogy, takes place in 2083 and follows a 13-year-old orphan named Shama Katooee in LowCity, DC. Shama is mysteriously selected to attend a privileged academy in UpCity, where privileged children of GodZillionaires are trained in the practice of Time Watch. Shama learns how to operate a QuanTime machine and how to get along with kids who come from very different backgrounds than her own. While trying to solve the mystery of why she was chosen, Shama is being trained for the ultimate mission: saving her own life.
