CFISD names new director of athletics

May 16, 2012—Ed Warken, the director of athletics at Galena Park ISD, has been named the new director of athletics for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Warken will replace Larry Peil, who announced his retirement this month. He will begin his new role with CFISD on June 1.
Warken has served as the athletic director in Galena Park since 1991. During his 21-year span with the 22,000-student school district, he served as a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association (NIAAA), president for the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA) and was a THSADA Hall of Honor recipient in 2004.
Previously, Warken worked as an assistant principal at Westfield High School and a teacher and coach at Spring High School in Spring ISD between 1981-1991. He began his teaching and coaching career at West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, Mich., from 1974-1981.
Warken received his Bachelor of Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., and his Master of Athletic Administration from Michigan State University. He is certified in mid-management administration from Sam Houston State Univeristy and is a certified athletic administrator by the NIAAA.
“I’ve been in the greater Houston area for 31 years, and I’ve always looked at Cy-Fair as the premier school district. Amid all the growth and addition of schools, particularly in the last 10 to 15 years, I can see the same kind of overwhelming support—administrative, community and parental—in Cy-Fair as I’ve had here at Galena Park,” Warken said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family, and I feel very fortunate and excited to join the athletics team and support and work with the fine coaches and athletes in CFISD.”
