Post Elementary students support Ronald McDonald House

August 13, 2012—Over two consecutive school years, students at Post Elementary School have donated more than 100 pounds of soda can tabs to support the Houston Ronald McDonald House (RMH)—a facility providing affordable accommodations to families with seriously ill children being treated in Texas Medical Center member institutions.
Organized by Post physical education teachers Alicia Almanza and Carrie Ibrahim, students donated the soda tabs during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years, bringing the collections to the Houston RMH during each of the last two summers.
The students donated 57 pounds worth of tabs in 2010-2011 and 59 pounds in 2011-2012, utilizing a bucket in the front of the gymnasium that Almanza and Ibrahim publicized. The RMH submits the tabs to local recycling centers, receiving a check for their value that will support the Houston chapter.
Almanza said she borrowed the idea from her church’s Sunday school class, which took up a similar donation for the Houston RMH.
“We were extremely proud of our students for thinking of others and donating so many tabs,” Almanza said. “They came together and even got their families involved to help these local families coping with sick children.”
