    HOW WE GOT OUR NAME

The Cypress-Fairbanks Board of Trustees has a proud tradition of naming schools in honor of individuals who have contributed significantly to the school district and its students. Mr. William C. Copeland was this kind of employee. He spent nearly three decades of service as the Tax Assessor and Collector.

Mr. Copeland began his career with the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in 1963, and continued to serve with distinction as the area grew from a small farm community to being the second largest district in Harris County. A native of the Spring Branch area of Houston, he was named Tax Assessor of the Year for the State of Texas in 1974.

Mr. Copeland retired in the spring of 1992, and his years of service were honored later that fall by the opening of William C. Copeland Elementary. Mr. Copeland enjoyed visiting with students at Copeland and always attended special events at the school until his “homecoming” in the fall of 2008.
