Student Qualifications for Off-Campus Physical Education

Thank you for your interest in the CFISD Off-Campus Physical Education (OCPE) program. The CFISD OCPE program is designed for student-athletes participating in supervised, professional training at a highly intensive level, which exceeds that of their peers in the sport. These students are making a serious effort to further develop higher-level skills in their specific sport or activity that exceeds what the district can offer.

Not every sport qualifies for OCPE. Individual sports or activities, as well as team sports not offered in the district, may qualify.

Application Deadlines

To apply for the upcoming school year, students must submit their applications by May 1. Applications for the Spring semester only are due by November 1. New students to the district who meet the criteria may apply outside of these windows by contacting the OCPE department.

To be eligible, students must have a minimum of 10 hours of training per week for at least 12 months prior to applying. The student’s coach must provide written verification on the facility’s letterhead that verifies the student's training history (including years with the facility and current coach), past and anticipated weekly training hours, their current level of competition, and achievements in the sport or activity. Eligibility will be determined using the CFISD Off-Campus PE Eligibility Rubric.

Once enrolled in the program, students must train for a minimum of 15 hours under the supervision of a highly qualified coach. The OCPE office will make intermittent, unscheduled visits to verify participation and attendance.

Students are not permitted on campus during their OCPE class period.

To be considered for the program, students must:

  1. Have participated in a training facility for a minimum of 10 hours per week for at least 12 months prior to submitting an application.
  2. Participate at only one facility. Students may not split Off-Campus PE training between multiple facilities.
  3. Upload a letter of recommendation from the facility coach with the online application. The letter must include:
  • Number of years associated with the facility
  • Number of years with current coach
  • Number of training hours per week in the 12 months preceding their application
  • Number of anticipated training hours at the specified facility if accepted into the program
  • Current rating or level of competition/performance
  • List examples of local, area, state, national, or international competitions/performances the student has participated in
  • Awards/Achievements in sport/activity
  1. Submit the completed application before the deadline of May 1 for the following school year and November 1 for the Spring semester. Students who are new to the district and meet the criteria may apply outside of the standard application windows. For more information, please contact the OCPE department.
  2. Complete a minimum of 15 hours per week of highly intensive professional training, supervised by the facility coach. These hours do not include games, performances, competitions, tournaments, travel time, or teaching others.
  3. Depart campus at the beginning of the last period or enter at the second period of the school day. (Students are not permitted on campus during their OCPE class period).
  4. Not hold CFISD responsible for payment or fees charged by the training facility.
  5. Understand that they will be removed from OCPE if they are not attending the state-required 15 hours per week.
  6. Understand that they will be removed from OCPE if they have an extended absence of more than two weeks due to injury or illness, in accordance with the 90% attendance rule.
  7. Understand the risk of losing credit if they quit the program before the end of the semester and are not immediately placed in a campus physical education class.
  8. Notify the OCPE department:
  • To request a facility change if needed.
  • If they are removed, dropped, or dismissed from their approved facility, as this will result in being removed from OCPE.
  1. Ensure the facility turns in attendance and grades to the OCPE department on time. Failure of the facility to meet this responsibility will result in the student being dropped from the program.
  2. Have competition absences approved by the school at least two weeks in advance. Competition requests may be denied due to existing excessive absences, academic problems, or other circumstances. A competition request form will be provided to parents and facilities once a student is approved for the OCPE program.

If a student meets the above qualifications or if you would like more information about the program, please contact the Off-Campus PE department at (281) 517-2802 or (281) 897-4140.
