Original Credits

Students may earn ½ credit (L-level) each session. To get credit for the course, students may not be absent more than 2 days during each session.

Original Credit Course Offerings

Original credit courses are designed for these students: (1) students who need a course to meet promotion standards; (2) students who are eight credits from graduation; (3) students who are planning to graduate early; or (4) students who are accelerating a course sequence to be able to take upper-level courses. In order to be successful on the End-of-Course tests, students must be enrolled in the appropriate English, math, science, or social studies courses in grades 9-11. Therefore, the following criteria for enrollment in original credit courses must be met. Students taking original credit courses in the four core academic areas must meet (1) all prerequisites for the course and (2) any additional criteria listed in the chart below. It is strongly recommended that students taking original credit courses in the four core academic areas currently be earning an A or B in a course in that content area or have a passing score on the most recent State assessment test in that content area.

One day in summer school equals eight days in the regular school term.

Attendance and Absences

  • Prompt arrival and daily attendance are mandatory for academic success in summer school. The following provision is made, however, in case of student illness or emergencies: A student absent from class because of illness or family emergency should bring an explanatory note signed by the parent and check in through the principal's office upon his/her return to school.
  • Students who are absent from class for more than two days for any reason during either session will be withdrawn and no credit or refund granted. This applies to both original credit courses and make-up credit courses. Being absent for two days of summer school is comparable to being absent 15-18 days during the regular term.
  • Three tardies in any class will count as one day of absence. A tardy will be assessed for late arrival in the morning and for late arrival following the lunch period and breaks; however, students arriving 15 or more minutes late in the morning will be marked absent ½ day.
  • Summer school students taking an EOC are expected to report to the summer school site within one hour of completing the EOC exam.

Food Service

Breakfast will be served at 7:15 a.m. each day. Students will have lunch between 11:00 and 12:15, when they will be able to purchase a lunch in the cafeteria or snack bar.

  • Unacceptable behavior will result in a student's immediate dismissal from summer school.
