May 20, 2025—Cypress Ranch High School sophomore Stacey Matindu and Cypress Ranch senior Munira Abdullah placed first and third, respectively, in the 24th Annual Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT) School Bus Safety Speech Contest.
The theme for the 2025 contest was “Safety First – Safety Always.” In addition to Matindu and Abdullah placing at the state contest, Cypress Ranch freshman Jane Mortensen also competed.
Matindu will present her winning speech at the 2025 TAPT Annual Conference in Fort Worth on June 22 during the first general session.
“I could not be prouder of these young women and the efforts they put forth,” said Dr. Kayne Smith, director of transportation. “A total of 19 students competed at the state level and we are honored to have the state champion in CFISD. Their speeches were powerful, expressing the importance of the yellow bus in a student’s day and the real possibility that the bus may go away due to budget constraints, as our students who spoke have experienced. Their focus on advocacy for all students, public education and safety was impeccable.”
