Nov. 21, 2024—CFISD welcomed elected officials and staff members to a State Legislators Breakfast on Nov. 21 at the Mark Henry, Ed.D. Administration Building, where they learned about key issues impacting the school district ahead of the 89^th Texas Legislative Session.

Dr. Doug Killian, superintendent of schools, led the session for state representatives and staff members from nearby legislative districts. The guests learned about CFISD’s 89^th Texas Legislative Session priorities, results of a recent efficiency audit conducted by Weaver & Tidwell, challenges CFISD faces with TEA’s new Ed-Fi data reporting system, as well as assessment and accountability concerns.

CFISD’s Legislative Priorities for the upcoming session include:

• Fully fund school districts that offer a Local Optional Homestead Exemption (LOHE).
• Increase the School Safety Allotment.
• Increase the Special Education Allotment.
• Increase the Transportation Allotment.

Dr. Killian thanked all representatives and their staff for supporting and serving the CFISD community. District 138 State Rep. Lacey Hull and District 132 State Rep. Mike Schofield, who were both in attendance, have already filed bills that would provide local property tax relief while helping provide additional funding to school districts that offer an LOHE.

District 17 State Sen. Joan Huffman filed Senate Bill 260 last week that would double the School Safety Allotment.

Huffman for prioritizing school safety through SB 260, a bill that would provide key assistance to districts like CFISD that exceed our current allotment to benefit our students and staff,” said Justin Ray, CFISD Board secretary. “We look forward to working alongside our local delegates to prioritize the success of our students and strength of our community.”
