Nov. 8, 2025—The district announced the launch of the CFISD Virtual Pathways program during the Board of Trustees work session on Nov. 6.
Senate Bill 569, which passed in the 89th Texas Legislative Session, provides districts with ADA funding for students participating in virtual programs. Based on a withdrawal report, 1,112 CFISD resident students attended virtual schools in the 2024-25 school year.
To meet the increasing needs of the community, CFISD will launch the program for 9th-12th grade students and 4th-5th grade students, with future plans to expand the program as interest and enrollment grows.
The program will feature three virtual pathways in 2026-27: the CFISD Virtual Academy, CFISD Flex Learning and CFISD Supplemental Courses.
“Launching these three pathways allows CFISD to offer a comprehensive suite of virtual options: a full-time academy, flexible scheduling within traditional campuses, and tuition-based supplemental opportunities,” said Dr. Meredith Akers, director of CFISD Virtual Pathways. “These options provide lots of reasons for families to choose CFISD.”
The CFISD Virtual Academy provides a complete online option for students seeking a non-traditional learning environment. This option will be primarily asynchronous with some synchronous activities, including live instruction online with class and small group sessions with individualized support. The Virtual Academy:
- functions as a program within CFISD schools
- allows for participation in UIL and extracurricular activities
- Is available to 9th-12th and 4th-5th grade students
- plans to expand to middle school in 2027-28 as interest and enrollment grows
CFISD Flex Learning allows students to spend the majority of their day at their CFISD home campus, and offers flexibility for students balancing extracurricular activities, jobs or unique family schedule. The Flex Learning option:
- allows students to complete 1–2 classes online asynchronously
- is available to 11th-12th grades
CFISD Supplemental Courses allows online courses taken outside of the scheduled school day, and helps students accelerate graduation, make room for an additional elective or earn credit recovery. The Supplemental Courses option:
- is tuition-based, similar to summer school
- is available to high school students
Families interested in any of the Virtual Pathways may complete the Virtual Pathways Initial Inquiry Form available at virtual.cfisd.net. Priority enrollment for the CFISD Academy and Flex Learning pathways for current CFISD students is open now and ends Dec. 18, 2025, with the final enrollment deadline set for Feb. 16, 2026.
Students currently not enrolled in CFISD schools can also complete the Virtual Pathways Initial Inquiry Form at virtual.cfisd.net to inform the Virtual Pathways team about your family’s interest, and complete the New Student Registration process when it opens in the spring.
