31 CFISD wrestlers qualify for 2020 UIL state tournament

Feb. 18, 2020—Thirty-one wrestlers from 11 CFISD high schools placed in the top four of their respective weight classes at the Region III-6A Wrestling Championships on Feb. 14-15 at the Merrell Center in Katy to qualify for the UIL Wrestling State Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 21-22 at the Berry Center.

In the boys’ tournament, Cypress Woods High School had the highest team finish, tying for third place with 113 total points. Cypress Ranch High School placed ninth with 73 points, while Cypress Park High School tied for 14th with 50 points.

CFISD had three boys’ regional champions:

  • Cypress Ranch freshman Alexander Robeson-Moreira won the 106-pound title, defeating Katy Morton Ranch High School’s Douglas Melrose, 19-4;
  • Cypress Falls High School junior Ruben Calderon won the 126-pound title, defeating Katy Tompkins High School’s Cole Minnick, 13-7; and
  • Cypress Woods senior Marc Hawthorne won the 182-pound title, defeating Katy Seven Lakes High School’s Barto Radman, 5-1.

Calderon was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Male Wrestler.

In the girls’ tournament, five CFISD schools finished in the top 10 led by Cypress Park (86.5 points), which third behind champion Katy Tompkins and Katy Morton Ranch. Langham Creek (58) and Cypress Ridge (55) high schools finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while Cypress Woods (51) placed ninth just ahead of Cypress Creek High School (50).

CFISD had three girls’ regional champions:

  • Cypress Creek senior Amanda McAleavey won the 102-pound title, defeating Katy Morton Ranch High School’s Brittany Cotter, 6-0;
  • Cypress Ranch senior Nia Miranda won the 148-pound title, defeating Clear Lake High School’s Mia Cayard, 12-1;
  • Bridgeland High School junior Callie Youngblood won the 215-pound title, defeating Cypress Ridge junior Melanie Oyervides, 1-0;

The fifth-place wrestler in each weight class will advance to state as an alternate. The following 40 wrestlers and 12 alternates placed in the top five in their respective regions:

  • Sylvester Villarreal, Cypress Ridge, 285 pounds.
