Aug. 12, 2019—The CFISD administration presented its 2019-2020 pre-kindergarten proposal to the Board of Trustees during its committee-of-the-whole meeting on Aug. 8.
House Bill 3, passed during the 87th Texas Legislative Session, requires school districts that currently offer a half-day pre-K program to adopt a full-day program effective in the 2019-2020 school year. Age, income and other present eligibility requirements are to remain unchanged.
CFISD proposed to expand all existing campus half-day programs into full-day pre-K beginning in January 2020. The programs will mirror full-day pilot programs that were already in place at Francone and Hoover elementary schools.
The proposal allows the district time to supply campuses with instructional materials and schedules, as well as to prepare a modified transportation schedule and expand nutrition services offerings. CFISD would also expedite hiring 80 pre-K teachers and 80 paraeducators to accommodate the anticipated growth and change.
