Feb. 9, 2019—The Cypress Ranch High School girls’ wrestling team continued its historic run of winning, while the boys claimed their own title to give the Mustangs both at the District 10-6A Championships on Feb. 7-8 at the Berry Center.

Cypress Ranch clinched the girls’ title with 128 team points, followed by runner-up Langham Creek (122) and third-place Cy-Fair (116) high schools. The Mustangs won their first district title in program history in 2017 before repeating in 2018 on the way to capturing a state championship.

The Cypress Ranch High School boys’ wrestling team won the district championship, edging Cypress Ridge High School by 1.5 points in the final standings in the 10-6A tournament Feb. 7-8 at the Berry Center.

“They’re hardworking, they listen so well but I think more importantly now is they’re developing that winning culture and that attitude,” said Chris Potter, Cypress Ranch head coach. “They want to win and work hard. We keep telling them the harder you work, the luckier you get, and they just keep proving it.”

The Cypress Ranch boys earned 204.5 points to edge Cypress Ridge for first place in the team standings. Cypress Ridge High School scored 203 points, while Cy-Fair (161.5) placed third.

“They fought and they showed heart,” Potter said. “We’re missing two of our better wrestlers so we knew we really had to step up. We had a lot of younger kids stepping up and winning matches they’d never won before. Our goal at the beginning of the year was two district championships and the boys really showed a lot of heart in making that happen.”

Cy-Fair senior Garrett Orlando, who won the 132-pound division to improve to 31-3 on the year, was named Most Outstanding Male Wrestler. Cypress Ranch sophomore Macayla Potter, who won the 128-pound division and earned her 46th victory this season, was named Most Outstanding Female Wrestler.
